Structural Editing

No matter how often you revise your manuscript, or how often your friends tell you your story is brilliant, an author can’t edit your own story. It’s impossible to be objective when you have spent months inside your own novel. A structural edit by a professional editor is the next step on your journey to being published.

A structural edit looks at the big picture. It is a time-consuming and thorough edit, and looks at:

Plot: Does your plot make sense? Is it believable to the reader?

Themes: Do they complement your plot or do they interfere with it?

Character: How well have you developed your characters? Will the reader care about them? Is their behaviour consistent with their personality, believable?

Protagonist: Is their goal clear to the reader? Have you created tension, roadblocks?

Point of View/Voice: Is your point of view consistent, easy to follow? Do your characters have their own voice? Are there too many, or too few, points of view?

Pace: Does your story keep moving? Is your prose overwritten, taking the reader out of the story?

Dialogue: Does it add to your character development? Does it move the story forward? Do your characters have their own voices?

Flow: Have you thrown a backstory or irrelevant ramble into the middle of action? Have you kept the narrative moving through every scene?

Writing style: Are your sentences too long, too short, or well balanced? Is your descriptive prose too flowery?

Setting: Have you built a world the reader wants to step into? Have you set your story in a particular location then forgotten to describe it to the reader?

Sample Edit
It can be difficult to know whether your manuscript needs a structural edit, copy edit or proofread – or all three.  For this reason we recommend a sample edit of 3,000 words. We will match you with the editor who has the most experience in your genre and they will carefully edit your sample, then provide you with professional advice about the way your manuscript should be edited.

How We Edit

We respect that the words are all yours so we resist any urge to pick up a red pen. We edit in Microsoft Word and use Track Changes; our comments and suggestions are all made in TC and not on your manuscript.

We will match you to the editor whose skills and experience best fit your genre. They will work closely with you to ensure your experience with Inspire the Fire is professional, individual and satisfying.

Fees

Structural edit: $65 per hour

Given the varying length of manuscripts it is not possible to quote a complete price until the work is completed.

 Copy Editing

While structural editing considers the big picture, copy editing is the stage where your manuscript is edited line by line. Our editors look for:

  • Grammar, syntax, spelling and punctuation;
  • Word choice;
  • Logic, clarity and flow;
  • Consistency;
  • Correct use of abbreviations;
  • General suggestions on structure;
  • Querying errors;
  • Word reduction;
  • Formatting;
  • Fact checking; and
  • Copyright and legal issues.
